IUI Treatment at Genesis Fertility Center

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is one of the simplest fertility treatments available. During the procedure, specially prepared sperm are placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation to increase the chance of fertilization.

At Genesis Fertility Center (GFC), every IUI treatment begins with a thorough fertility assessment. Our specialists evaluate both partners before recommending IUI to ensure it is the most appropriate treatment for your individual circumstances.

    Why Choose GFC for IUI?

Choosing the right fertility clinic is just as important as choosing the right treatment.
Genesis Fertility Center (GFC) is one of Thailand’s leading fertility clinics and a SET-listed public company (Ticker: GFC). Our team of seven fertility specialists, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pitak Laokirkkiat (Medical License #18494), provides personalized fertility care supported by advanced reproductive technology.

Each year, we care for more than 2,000 patients. Before recommending IUI, we carefully assess the cause of infertility so that every couple receives the treatment most likely to achieve pregnancy. You can also explore our patient success stories to learn how personalized care has helped many couples on their fertility journey.

    What is IUI?

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is a fertility treatment that places specially prepared, healthy sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation to improve the chances of fertilization. Before the procedure, the semen sample is processed in our laboratory to concentrate the healthiest, most motile sperm. The insemination takes only a few minutes using a thin, flexible catheter, and most patients can resume their normal daily activities shortly afterward.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IUI?

IUI may be recommended for couples with certain fertility conditions, including:

    • Unexplained infertility
    • Mild male factor infertility
    • Ovulation disorders
    • Mild endometriosis
    • Ejaculation or cervical factor problems
    • Couples using donor sperm

IUI is generally not recommended when:

    • Both fallopian tubes are blocked.
    • Severe male factor infertility is present.
    • IVF or ICSI is more likely to provide a better chance of pregnancy.

Our fertility specialists will recommend the treatment that best matches your diagnosis and fertility goals.

    IUI vs. ICSI

    IUI ICSI
    RPrice TBH 15,000 TBH 150,000 - 350,000
Complexity Very low, no anesthesia High, anesthetized
Hurt It hardly hurts Slight pain after egg retrieval
    Time 2-3 weeks 2 months
    Success rate/cycle 10-20% 60-65%
Suitable for Mild infertility Moderate to severe infertility
    OHSS risk Very low Moderate

It is recommended to start with IUI first if there is no clear indication for immediate ICSI, as it is significantly more cost-effective. If IUI is unsuccessful after 3-6 rounds, then consider switching to ICSI, which provides more available data to aid in better planning.

    The IUI Process

The IUI procedure usually involves four simple steps.

    Step 1 – Ovarian Monitoring

Depending on your treatment plan, medication may be prescribed to stimulate egg development. Ultrasound examinations are performed to monitor follicle growth and determine the optimal time for insemination.

    Step 2 – Sperm Preparation

On the day of treatment, the semen sample is collected and prepared in our laboratory. Our embryologists select the healthiest, most motile sperm before insemination.

    Step 3 – Insemination

Your fertility specialist gently places the prepared sperm into the uterus using a soft catheter. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes and does not require anesthesia.

    Step 4 – Pregnancy Test

Approximately two weeks after IUI, a blood test is performed to determine whether pregnancy has occurred.

The insemination procedure usually takes only a few minutes and does not require anaesthesia.

    Preparing for IUI

Good preparation helps support the best possible treatment outcome.

    Preparation for Female Patients

Before your IUI cycle, our specialists may recommend:

    • Attend all scheduled ultrasound appointments.
    • Take fertility medication exactly as prescribed.
    • Eat a balanced diet.
    • Maintain a healthy body weight.
    • Sleep at least 7–8 hours each night.
    • Avoid smoking and alcohol.
    • Continue prescribed vitamins or supplements if recommended by your doctor.

    Preparation for Male Patients

To help optimize sperm quality before treatment:

    • Abstain from ejaculation for 2–7 days before providing the semen sample.
    • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol.
    • Get adequate sleep.
      Stay well hydrated.
    • Avoid high heat exposure such as hot tubs or saunas before treatment.
    • Inform your doctor about any recent illness or fever.

Our embryologists prepare the semen sample in our laboratory by selecting the healthiest, most motile sperm before insemination.

    After the IUI Procedure

Most patients can return to normal daily activities shortly after treatment.

    We generally recommend:

    • Rest briefly before leaving the clinic.
    • Resume normal daily activities.
    • Take medications exactly as prescribed.
    • Eat a healthy diet and stay hydrated.
    • Return approximately 14 days later for a pregnancy blood test.

Your fertility specialist will provide personalized instructions based on your treatment plan.

    What Affects IUI Success?

Several factors influence the chance of pregnancy after IUI, including:

    • Female age
    • Egg quality and ovarian reserve
    • Sperm quality after preparation
    • Ovulation timing
    • Endometrial thickness
    • The underlying cause of infertility

Published studies report pregnancy rates of approximately 10–20% per treatment cycle, although success varies depending on each couple’s individual fertility profile. IUI success can vary depending on factors such as the woman’s age, the cause of infertility, sperm quality, ovulation timing, and the use of fertility medications. If you’re wondering how IUI compares with conceiving naturally, read our guide on the IUI vs natural conception success rate to better understand the differences.

    If Pregnancy Does Not Occur

If pregnancy is not achieved after an appropriate number of IUI cycles, your fertility specialist may recommend IVF or ICSI to improve the chance of success.

Our goal is to recommend the treatment that is most appropriate for your diagnosis, not simply the least invasive option.
