Can You Do ICSI Without a Marriage Certificate in Thailand?

If you are considering IVF or ICSI in Thailand but are not legally married, one of the first questions to answer is whether you are eligible for treatment.

In Thailand, legally registered marriage is a key requirement for assisted reproductive treatment. At Genesis Fertility Center (GFC), patients must provide a valid marriage certificate before starting IVF or ICSI treatment.

This requirement is relevant to international patients as well as Thai patients. If your marriage was registered outside Thailand, the clinic may require translation, certification or legalisation of your documents.

For couples who are not yet married, fertility assessment and future treatment planning can still be discussed with a specialist.

Quick answer: Patients planning IVF or ICSI in Thailand should expect to provide evidence of a legally recognised marriage. The documents required depend on where the marriage was registered, the patients’ circumstances and the proposed treatment.

Why Is a Marriage Certificate Required for IVF in Thailand?

Thailand regulates assisted reproductive technology under the Protection of Children Born through Assisted Reproductive Technologies Act B.E. 2558 (2015) and related regulations.

The Thai Department of Health Service Support has explained that IVF treatment is subject to legally registered marriage requirements, including marriages registered overseas that are recognised under Thai law.

For patients, the practical distinction is important: a long-term relationship, religious ceremony or informal partnership is not automatically equivalent to a legally registered marriage.

A clinic must confirm that the patients’ documentation and proposed treatment meet current requirements.

Official reference: Thai Department of Health Service Support – IVF marriage requirements.

Because Thailand introduced marriage equality in January 2025, historical references to a “husband and wife” should not be treated as a complete explanation of eligibility for every legally married couple today. Specific assisted reproduction requirements must be checked separately.

Do You Need a Marriage Certificate for ICSI in Thailand?

Yes. GFC requires a valid marriage certificate before starting ICSI treatment.

ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, is a form of IVF in which an individual sperm is injected into a mature egg.

Although IVF and ICSI use different fertilisation techniques, both fall within Thailand’s assisted reproductive treatment framework.

If you are travelling to Thailand for ICSI, arrange document verification before confirming treatment dates.

What About IUI? Is a Marriage Certificate Required?

Marriage documentation is also relevant to IUI, or intrauterine insemination, under Thailand’s assisted reproduction requirements.

Patients should confirm the currently applicable eligibility rules and clinic procedures before arranging treatment.

Learn more about IUI treatment in Thailand, including how the procedure works and when it may be recommended.

Can Unmarried Couples Have a Fertility Consultation in Thailand?

A fertility consultation is different from starting an assisted reproductive treatment cycle.

Unmarried patients may contact a fertility clinic to discuss medical history, reproductive goals, fertility investigations and future treatment options.

However, receiving a consultation does not automatically establish eligibility to begin IVF, ICSI or IUI.

For international patients, the most useful first step is to contact GFC before booking flights.

Patients can begin with fertility counseling at Genesis Fertility Center to discuss their circumstances and the documentation that may be needed.

Marriage Certificate Checklist for International IVF Patients

Preparing documents before travelling can prevent delays, unnecessary expenses and cancelled treatment plans.

Document Why it may be required
Passports or official identification To verify patient identities
Marriage certificate To establish legally registered marriage
Certified translation Where the original document is in another language
Embassy certification or legalisation To authenticate certain overseas documents
Name-change documentation To reconcile differences between identity and marriage records
Previous fertility records To assess medical history
Semen analysis To assess relevant male fertility factors
Hormone tests or ovarian reserve assessment To evaluate ovarian function
Previous IVF or ICSI records To review earlier treatment outcomes

The precise requirements depend on the issuing country, document language and treatment pathway.

What If My Marriage Certificate Is Not in Thai?

GFC’s Thai-language guidance indicates that foreign-language marriage certificates may require translation and appropriate certification.

Ask GFC whether a certified Thai translation, embassy certification or another legalisation procedure applies to your particular document.

For a broader overview, read the guide to IVF in Thailand for Foreigners, covering documentation, treatment planning and travel considerations.

What If We Are Married but Do Not Have the Original Certificate?

Do not assume that a photograph or scanned copy will be accepted for treatment.

Ask GFC whether an original certificate, certified copy or other authenticated document is required.

Before travelling, request written confirmation that your marriage documents are sufficient for the proposed treatment.

What About Same-Sex Married Couples?

Thailand’s Marriage Equality Act took effect on 23 January 2025, allowing same-sex couples to register legally recognised marriages.

Marriage recognition and eligibility for a specific assisted reproductive procedure are related but distinct questions.

For same-sex married couples, treatment eligibility may depend on the procedure, reproductive arrangements, documentation and current interpretation of applicable regulations.

International couples should therefore contact GFC before travelling and ask for an individual assessment rather than assuming either automatic eligibility or automatic exclusion.

Official reference: Thailand Government Public Relations Department – Marriage Equality Act.

What If We Are Not Married Yet?

Patients who are not legally married may still discuss fertility planning and investigations with a specialist.

Depending on individual circumstances, these may include:

  • Fertility consultation and assessment
  • Ovarian reserve testing
  • Semen analysis
  • Review of previous fertility treatment
  • Preconception counselling
  • Fertility preservation, where clinically appropriate

These services should not be confused with permission to start IVF, ICSI or IUI.

Egg Freezing Can Be Different

Egg freezing is a fertility-preservation procedure rather than embryo creation or transfer.

At GFC, a marriage certificate is not required for egg freezing.

Eggs can be retrieved, frozen using vitrification and stored for potential future use.

When the patient later wishes to fertilise the eggs or proceed with embryo treatment, the legal and clinical requirements applicable at that time must be satisfied.

Learn more about egg freezing in Thailand, including how it may help patients preserve reproductive options before marriage.

Can I Freeze My Eggs Before Getting Married?

Yes. Egg freezing may be an option for women who wish to preserve eggs before marriage or before they are ready to pursue fertility treatment.

GFC’s stated egg-freezing package is THB 170,000, covering freezing of up to 20 eggs and the first year of storage, subject to the package’s terms and inclusions.

The number of mature eggs actually retrieved varies according to factors such as age and ovarian response. The 20-egg package limit is not a guarantee of egg yield.

For a detailed explanation, see the guide to egg freezing cost for first-time patients in Bangkok.

Can I Use Frozen Eggs After I Get Married?

Potentially, yes.

Previously frozen eggs may be thawed and fertilised once the patient meets the applicable legal and clinical requirements.

At GFC, the planned pathway for using previously frozen eggs involves ICSI.

Read the complete guide to ICSI and IVF fertility treatment steps for more information about fertilisation, embryo development and transfer.

Egg freezing can preserve an option for future treatment, but it does not guarantee pregnancy or future eligibility for a particular procedure.

What About Donor Eggs or Donor Sperm?

Third-party reproduction has additional legal and medical requirements in Thailand.

Donor egg and donor sperm treatment should therefore be assessed separately from standard IVF using the intended parents’ own gametes.

Being legally married does not automatically establish eligibility for every form of donor treatment.

Before making arrangements, confirm donor eligibility, consent requirements, applicable restrictions and whether the proposed treatment is available at the clinic.

What About Surrogacy in Thailand?

Surrogacy is legally distinct from standard IVF and ICSI and is subject to additional restrictions.

International patients should not assume that eligibility for IVF also means eligibility for surrogacy.

The proposed arrangement must be assessed against the specific Thai surrogacy rules, with appropriate professional legal advice.

What Happens If We Travel Without the Required Marriage Documents?

Traveling before document approval creates an avoidable financial and logistical risk.

If a marriage certificate, translation or certification is missing, treatment may be delayed or unable to proceed.

This is particularly relevant when:

  • The marriage was registered overseas
  • The certificate is not in Thai
  • A patient has changed their legal name
  • Either partner has been married previously
  • One or both partners have dual nationality
  • The couple has a same-sex marriage
  • The relationship is registered as a civil partnership
  • One or both patients are foreign nationals

Ask GFC to review your documents before booking non-refundable travel.

How Far in Advance Should International Patients Prepare?

Begin the documentation process before confirming treatment dates.

A practical preparation sequence is:

  1. Contact GFC. Explain your nationality, marital status and intended fertility treatment.
  2. Submit marriage documents for review. Ask whether translations or certification are needed.
  3. Prepare fertility records. Gather semen analysis, hormone results, ultrasound reports and previous treatment records.
  4. Arrange a consultation. Discuss medical suitability and the proposed treatment pathway.
  5. Complete required investigations. Ask which tests can be performed overseas.
  6. Confirm travel plans. Arrange flights and accommodation after the clinic clarifies documentation, eligibility and expected treatment timing.

What Does IVF or ICSI Cost at GFC?

Legal eligibility and document requirements should be established before committing to treatment expenses.

GFC’s stated ICSI package prices are:

ICSI package Published price
ICSI LiTE THB 150,000
ICSI Gold THB 170,000
ICSI Platinum THB 230,000
ICSI Diamond THB 350,000

The final cost depends on the selected package, its inclusions and any additional investigations, medication or procedures.

International patients should request a written quotation before arranging treatment.

For more information, read the ICSI Cost in Thailand guide.

Does PGT-A Change the Marriage Requirement?

No. PGT-A is embryo chromosome screening performed as part of an IVF or ICSI treatment pathway. It does not remove the underlying eligibility and consent requirements for assisted reproduction.

GFC’s stated NGS Plus pricing, combining PGT-A and polyploidy screening, is:

Screening Price
First embryo THB 39,900
Each additional embryo THB 15,900

These are promotional prices stated to apply through 31 December 2026, subject to GFC’s terms. Screening costs may be additional to the selected treatment package.

PGT-A is not automatically necessary for every patient and does not guarantee a successful pregnancy.

Learn more through PGT-A by NGS.
