Choosing an IVF clinic is a decision most people make once, under time pressure, with no basis for comparison. Bangkok makes it harder still, the city has a large, competitive IVF market, standards vary more than the marketing suggests, and if you are coming from abroad you are assessing all of it from a browser tab.
The good news is that the things separating a strong clinic from an average one are mostly checkable before you ever walk in. These are the nine that matter. 1. Does the clinic publish its prices?
Start here, because it filters faster than anything else.
A clinic that publishes real package prices online is making itself comparable and accountable. One that only offers “contact us for a quote” is preserving the ability to price you individually, which, in a market with a lot of international patients, is rarely to the patient’s advantage.
For reference on what published pricing looks like, Genesis Fertility Center lists its Thailand ICSI packages and pricing openly: LiTE at 150,000 THB, Gold at 170,000 THB, Platinum at 230,000 THB and Diamond at 350,000 THB, with the eligibility criteria for each stated rather than discovered later. LiTE and Gold, for instance, require age limits of 35 and 37 respectively, AMH of at least 1.2 ng/mL, and at least six eggs retrieved.
Whether or not those particular numbers suit you, that is the format to expect. If you cannot find a number, ask why.
2. Ask what the success rate is a percentage of
“70% success” is meaningless without a denominator. Per cycle started? Per egg retrieval? Per embryo transfer? Those produce very different numbers from identical clinical performance, and the most flattering framing is the one you will usually be shown.
Ask for the rate per embryo transfer, then ask how it changes by age band, and then ask what proportion of started cycles reach transfer at all. A clinic comfortable with those three questions is a clinic confident in its data.
As a reference point, GFC publishes an ICSI pregnancy rate of 60–65% per embryo transfer as a clinic average, rising to 70–75% when PGT-A genetic screening is used, based on 2,000+ patients treated annually. Note the structure of that claim, a rate, a denominator, and a volume it is drawn from. That is what a usable success figure looks like.
Individual results always vary with age, egg quality, and underlying diagnosis. Any clinic implying otherwise is selling. 3. Find out who will actually run your cycle
Fertility treatment is a sequence of judgement calls, stimulation protocol, dose adjustments, trigger timing, when to transfer and when to freeze everything. Those judgements are made by a specific doctor, and you should know which one.
Ask for the name of the doctor leading your cycle and their medical licence number, then verify it with the Medical Council of Thailand’s doctor-verification portal. Ask how large the medical team is and whether you will see the same doctor throughout. GFC, for example, runs a seven-doctor team led by Assoc. If a clinic will not name the doctor before you commit, that is your answer.
4. Ask about the laboratory, not just the doctor
The embryology lab is where most of the outcome is determined, and it is the part patients almost never ask about.
Worth asking: does the lab use time-lapse incubation, so embryos are monitored without being removed? How are embryos graded and selected by eye, or with algorithmic assistance? How many embryologists are on staff? What are the air handling and quality control standards?
You will not be able to independently audit the answers. You will learn a great deal from whether the clinic can answer fluently.
5. Understand the genetic testing terms before you agree to them
PGT-A genetic testing by NGS, screening embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before transfer, meaningfully changes outcomes for some patients and adds cost for all of them. It is also where quoted packages most often become unclear.
Ask three things: is PGT-A included or separate, what is the per-embryo or per-batch cost, and how long do results take. GFC prices PGT-A at 37,900 THB with results in 24 hours and approximately 99% accuracy. Whatever clinic you choose, get the equivalent numbers in writing before signing.
6. Ask what the package does not include
This is the single most common source of unpleasant surprises, particularly for international patients.
Stimulation medication is frequently excluded and can vary substantially depending on your protocol and dose ceiling — which is why the maximum stimulation covered by a package matters. GFC’s packages state theirs directly (2,400 IU on LiTE, 3,000 IU on Gold, 4,000 IU on Platinum and Diamond). Also confirm whether embryo freezing, storage, the frozen transfer itself, and any add-ons are inside or outside the quoted figure.
Ask for the all-in number for your likely scenario, not the headline package price.
7. Get a realistic timeline you can plan around
If you are travelling for treatment, timeline is not a detail, it is the whole logistics problem.
A standard ICSI cycle from the start of stimulation to a pregnancy test runs roughly six to eight weeks, though the in-clinic portion is shorter and some of that can be managed remotely. Ask specifically how many days you need to be physically in Bangkok, at which points, and what happens if your response to stimulation shifts the schedule. Clinics that give you a confident single number without asking about your cycle are not planning around you.
8. Ask what happens if the cycle doesn’t work
Ask before you start, not after. Roughly a third of transfers do not result in pregnancy even at good clinics, so this is a normal conversation, not a pessimistic one.
What does a follow-up consultation cost? Is there any refund, discount or multi-cycle structure? Will they review what happened and adjust the protocol, or repeat the same approach? A clinic that has a clear, pre-stated answer has thought about the outcome that happens to a lot of its patients.
